Home of the 10-Channel Workflow for Digital Photography
I’m Lee Varis, photographer, educator and digital imaging artist. I have maintained a website at this domain for over 15 years. I have divided my 40 years of experience almost equally between traditional film-based and digital imaging photography. This gives me a unique perspective on the evolution of photographic technology grounded in the tradition of old school craft.

Low Key Portrait Lighting – Unique Photo
Upcoming Seminars, Workshops & Appearances
-
Low Key traditionally is a dark or black background, with side lighting and deeper shadows for a dramatic and evocative portrait. It works well for great moody portraits, as well as character and theatrical images. The light and shadow sculpt the subject, using soft boxes, grids, and strip lights, and bring out an assortment of feelings. Low Key can be done with one, two or three lights, each one carving out a story of your subject. The morning consists of image presentations and demos, giving the participant the knowledge and tools to make striking and effective portraits. The afternoon will be shooting models with a variety of lighting modifiers so that you can fine tune your lighting to get exactly the impact you want! This workshop will expand your array of lighting styles for more depth, more character and powerful portraits! More information

Hi Lee you mentioned a new 10 channel workflow course some time ago any news?
All I can tell you right now is that I’ll have something ready by the end of this year!
Ahh THIS this year! Look forward to it .Are you planning on doing anything in the UK in the future? Anyway, thanks for all the great tutorials you give out, it is very generous of you and most appreciated.
Nick Bruce.
Lee, I get warning about your site possibly being Hacked. Don’t know if it is significant, but I cannot access your Menu – or to be more specific: On LeeVaris.com there is a button called “MENU”. It don’t work for me anymore.
Tom
LeeVaris.com is a url that was used for 500px galleries – this “site” is technically no longer available, and will probably disappear at some point – 500px made some changes in their infrastructure so this remnant probably doesn’t work properly any more – you can access the galleries from my main website: http://www.vars.com from the “Galleries” menu at the top.
Hey Lee, it’s Don from the OC. Wished you’d never abandoned us out west! I mean who needs love…lol? Let’s do another 10 channel workflow/calibration class out here soon. Paul’s Photo? I can fill it just from the two camera and critique groups I help with. Cheers!
Hi Lee, I purchased “The big deal” Bundle but when I try to access your “Photo-Illustration in Photoshop” it says I have an invalid code or its expired. It says on the redemption instructions that the codes will be valid until 25/8/15. Please advise – Cheers – Andy.
Sorry, I fixed the issue – your code should work now!
Great, that worked – Thanks
Hello, I was watching one of your tutorials on you tube (skin softening using high pass) and you mentioned that this procedure was not in the new “Skin” book. What is this book? What is the full title and do you know the title of the most recent version? Thanks very much for your help!
Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally, Lighting, Photographing
and Retouching Faces and Bodies – 2nd edition
ISBN-10: 0470592125
ISBN-13: 978-0470592120

Hello Mr Varis, I just found and watched the youtube tutorial you have on removing red blotches of skin . First I would like to say thanks you its a great technique that will save me tons of time. I am curious to know if you have ever attempted to use the same method to ADD color . Like some skin tan for example. I recently had a model who has some tan to her face but her arms are very white / pale
Him Lee, I purchased the Big Deal Bundle, but with all the info available, I have not yet downloaded your content “The Fundamentals of Photo-Illustration in Photoshop”. can you please extend the download deadline?
If you have registered for the course (clicked on the enroll in course button) you should have lifetime access! There have been a number of major changes with the web server where the course is hosted and it seems like the download procedures have changed. If you are actually registered, and not just using the Big Deal link, you should be able to access all the videos—I’m still looking into the downloading aspect of things! Did you start the course yet? Free access through the Big Deal link has expired, and I’m not really in control of that—I should know more about downloading the videos if you are registered in a few days!
I previously purchased “The Fundamentals of Photo Illustration” and have forgotten my password. I ask it to let me generate a new password, but I get nothing. I waited a week thinking it might only be during weekdays, but nothing has happened this week. I did not purchase through the Big Deal link. I was using the course just fine until I lost my password. Regards, Wanda
Wanda, I do not have your name registered as a student, your email does not show up in the list—did you use another email to register for the course?
Dear Mr. Varis: Previously, I purchased the online course “Photo Illustration”. However, I have forgotten my password and now I cannot access the course. It will not let me generate a new password. What do I do? Regards.
