Very often we encounter a scene where everything works well except for a distracting background. Sometimes retouching out distracting elements can work, but sometimes we don’t want to resort to retouching, or we want to preserve some sense of the original background, and still separate the subject from the background in some way! Aerial perspective was used by the renaissance master painters to simulate 3D space and distance the subject from the background. The following is a very detailed examination of an aerial perspective technique for introducing an atmospheric effect into a photo to create a sense of space and separate foreground from background:
